Why is it in my interest to install a charging point?

Here you will find some of the most frequent questions, with their answers.

Electric vehicle manufacturers usually supply a cable that connects to a normal household socket. However, this cable should be used with caution and for occasional charges as it is necessary to select a charge load that can be supported by the electrical installation. If this power is not selected, the domestic socket may overheat and even cause major problems. This is why international standards and protocols have been established that allow safe and universal charging by using charging points. These have the following advantages:

1.Safety: A chargingpoint uses a pilot control function for data transmission between the vehicle and the charging equipment, which ensures maximum safety conditions throughout the charging process in the event of any unusual situation such as overheating batteries, unexpected disconnection or a problem with the charging cable, among others, protecting the user, the home's electrical installation and the vehicle itself.

2.Convenience: With Iberdrola Green Charging, you can have a charging point in your garage to charge your vehicles batteries easily, using the charging cable integrated into the equipment itself, and without always having to use the occasional charging cable provided by the vehicle manufacturer. Simply connect the charging point cable to the vehicle, and start charging!

3.Charging time: To charge up more quickly, electric cars are designed to draw more power than a household socket can withstand for a long time. Electric vehicle manufacturers recommend that charging is usually carried out through a charging point, and that a domestic socket is only used occasionally.

The electrical installation must comply with current regulations, so it must be adapted. Electric vehicles draw significant power during the charging process, so the Low Voltage Electrotechnical Regulations and, in particular, ITC-BT 52 sets a series of safety requirements to ensure that the installation is correct and has all the elements needed to protect people, the vehicle and the home itself. As with other household equipment such as air conditioning, electric heating or a tumble dryer, the charging point must be powered by an exclusive circuit, independent of the other loads, correctly rated for the intended load, and equipped with specific protections against direct and indirect contacts, overcurrents and overvoltages. The safety requirements for electrical installations are independent of the type of vehicle to be charged -the regulations do not distinguish between plug-in electric or hybrid vehicles, the power rating for the charging, or the charging system used (domestic socket or charging point).

Yes, as long as the charging point is compatible with the type of vehicle to be charged. Our charging points are valid for both cars and motorcycles.

If the charging point is installed in a single-family home with an integrated garage, a new electricity supply contract is not required. If the charging point is installed in a community garage and this is in the same building as the house, a priori, a new power supply contract will be required.

This depends on the contracted power, the characteristics of the vehicle and when the charging is carried out. At Iberdrola we advise you to charge at night when you are using less electricity at home. If you want to charge during the day, you may need to increase your power rating.

The law relating to horizontal properties has been modified to facilitate the installation of charging points in community garages, so that authorisation from your residents' association is no longer necessary prior to installing the electrical infrastructure through common areas. All you need to do is inform the association that you are installing a charging point. Iberdrola will advise you and, if you are interested, manage the installation and the necessary procedures with your association.

There are grants both at state level and through the autonomous communities.

The electricity for the Electric Vehicle Plan comes from 100% renewable sources, as established by European Directive 2001/77/EC, which do not emit greenhouse gases. Wind, solar and hydropower are considered 100% renewable sources. If you charge with the Electric Vehicle Plan, not only will you avoid emissions on your journeys, but you will also for your energy generation.
